THREE KINGDOMS AD 220-265

The collapse of the Eastern Jin Dynasty ushered in a period of over 300 years of disunity, known as the Six Dynasties period, covering the epochs of the Three Kingdoms, Western and Eastern Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties. The Han dynasty was weakened by the Yellow Turban uprising, leading to a period of warlords and incessant warfare between the kingdoms of Shu Han, Wei, and Wu. Cao Cao succeeded in wiping out most of the northern warlords, bringing the Yellow River valley under his control. In 220 Cao Pi, Cao Cao's eldest son, dethroned the Han emperor and established the kingdom of Wei, making Luoyand his capital. In 221 Liu Bei proclaimed himself emperor of Shu with Chendu his capital, and in 229 Sun Quan made himself emperor of the Wu with its capital now Nanjing.
