Mission of Dragon Culture
A green
jade pendant my parents gave to me when I was four years old
first whetted my appetite for collecting things. Like other
children, I began to hoard bus tickets, matches, and cigarette
boxes, and by the time I was ten years old, I had developed
an excellent stamp collection.
From
those beginnings, I turned to collecting seals, ink stones,
and paintings, bamboo carvings and snuff bottles, bronze Buddhas,
porcelain, and other types of Chinese art.
In the
late 70's, I was presented with a golden opportunity to expand
my collections. China had been in the throes of the Cultural
Revolution (1966-1976); many antiques and works of art had
been destroyed, but a lot had also been sold to the government
at very low prices. At the time, the Chinese government did
not have an antique bureau, and these artifacts were handled
by the import/export bureau. After the Cultural Revolution,
an antique bureau was eventually set up. Works
of art could be purchased from antique stores in all the major
cities and exported legally.
During
the late 70's and 80's, I traveled from city to city and from
province to province, visited the antique stores; from Hebei,
Shanxi and Shandong in the north, south through Hangzhou and
Guangzhou, and westwards into Sichuan; and of course, I frequented
the major cities such as Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai. Scholar's
items could be found easily in the Jiannan region, the cities
of Shouzhou, Wuseck, Jiangsu, Zheungzhou, Nianjing, and Yeungzhou.
I did
not buy according to a budget at the time. I just felt that
I should acquire and conserve as much material as possible.
Later, I had to sell some things in order to support further
purchases. It was during this period that the idea arose of
sharing with others my passion for collecting.
By integrating
my career with my love of Chinese culture, I am fulfilling
my dream of sharing this culture with others. Many people
ask why I chose to name my galleries "DRAGON CULTURE". This
name is an expression of my aspiration to preserve and contribute
to the culture of the Dragon that is China. One of the great
pleasures of my life has been the opportunity to meet with
people from all over the world who share my love of Chinese
(Dragon) culture. From late 80's, pottery from Stone Age,
Han, Tang, Ming, stone carvings from various dynasties, bronze
from Shang and etc can easily be found in Hollywood Road.
Today,
in mainland China, many people do not have the aesthetic understanding
to appreciate and preserve Chinese antiques. Much of their
heritage will be destroyed with the construction of the Chang
Jiang Sanxia Dam. By looking after the Chinese
antiques you acquire, you will be making a contribution to
the protection and preservation of Chinese culture, one of
the oldest cultures in the world. I believe that
as the country develops and prospers, the people of mainland
China will begin collecting and conserving his nation's great
cultural heritage. It will then become very expensive
to collect Chinese antiques. Indeed, the first
signs of this process are already apparent in categories such
as painting, porcelain and bronze Buddhas.
Like
many other collectors, I came across a lot of questions such
as "How to avoid buying fakes in the market? What determines
the value and price of a piece? How do I start my collection?" I
also experienced discouragement when I bought a fake piece. Many
wonderful, indeed fantastic works of art can be seen in galleries
along Hollywood Road, named one of the top ten shopping streets
in the world. However there are also many reproductions
in the market. I designed this web site to give
beginners some basic concepts and the knowledge necessary
for making the most of their collection.
