About the Book

Horses have long been an integral part of the history of China and the ancient world. First, they were considered livestock, then a military essential; later they become (became) the playthings of the nobility in their pursuit of leisure and prestige. During the third and second millennia BC, the nomadic peoples of the steppes created societies based around horses. Horses, chariots and cavalry played important roles of the strength of a tribe or a kingdom, and violence was usually involved in their acquisition. In ancient China the horse was always an auspicious symbol, standing for gallantry, health and success. It is also one of the animals of the Chinese zodiac.

Horses for Eternity (Horses for Eternity) includes examples of every major style of Chinese pottery horse from the early Western Han to the late Ming (with) 161 illustrations of horses and 81 illustrations of figurines in all. It illustrates the evolution of horses in the dynastic China, in the forms of their breeds and accessories, traces the linkage between the nomadic horse tribes in northern China and those from the West and Central Asia, and unfolds the stories behind these artifacts. It is an uncommon book for anyone interested in Chinese history and culture .

……Throughout history the role of the horse in war and commerce has made it a focus of human interest. It continues to draw fascination and admiration, though for most urban societies it has lost its economic value……The horse is considered beautiful, noble, powerful, faithful and dependable, and the wonderful collection of art in this book is a reminder of this strong attraction……
